HIGHWAY TRANSPORT
A quality transportation infrastructure allows full advantage to be taken of Brno's strategic location of Brno and the entire region. The city itself lies at the intersection of the motorways D1 (Prague - Brno - Lipník nad Bečvou) and D2 (Brno - Bratislava), which are part of the west - east (France - Ukraine: E50) and north - south (Scandinavia - Balkans: E55, E65) trans-European arteries. In addition, interconnected transport infrastructure exists in the form of the E461 expressway along the route Svitavy - Brno - Pohořelice - Vienna (connecting in Vienna to the E49 and E59) and the E462 expressway, running from Brno through Ostrava and Český Těšín to Kraków, Poland (connecting in Kraków to the E77).

RAIL TRANSPORT
In the course of its historical development, the Brno metropolitan area saw most of its area interconnected by railroads and the railroad holds great importance, particularly for suburban traffic. Brno is at the intersection of two multimodal corridors connecting to the trans-European TEN: IV network, Berlin - Prague - Brno - Břeclav - Vienna/Bratislava and branch B of the VI corridor Gdaňsk - Katovice - Ostrava - Břeclav - Bratislava (with direct connection to Brno). The City of Brno is integrated into the European high-speed rail network and is slated to become one of the nodes of this network.

AIR TRANSPORT
A significant advantage enjoyed by the City of Brno is its Category I international airport - Brno Airport, Ltd., in Brno-Tuřany (international designation ICAO-LKTB). Its runway is 2650 m long and 60 m wide. With its technical specifications and facilities, the airport meets international standards for year-round service for all types of aircraft even under challenging meteorological conditions. At the present time, three regular air connections are in service: Brno - Prague, Brno - London and Brno - Moscow. The airport is also a departure point for charter flights (e.g., To Greece, Spain, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Egypt, Croatia and Morocco).
In the year 2006, a new departure hall was opened enabling departures according to the rules given in the Schengen agreements, and not only increasing the capacity and comfort of departures but also bringing a new prestige to the airport in the region.
MUNICIPAL MASS TRANSPORT
Municipal mass transport (MHD) in Brno is operated by Brno Municipal Transit, Ltd.
The backbone of the transport network is made up of 13 tram lines interconnected in the central area of the city, complemented by trolley bus radials and feeder bus lines, peripheral bus circuits and a trolley bus tangent. Dopravní Podnik Města Brna further provides recreational boat rides At the Brno Reservoir. Dopravní Podnik Města Brna, with its MHD operating network covers an area of 290 km2, extending beyond the city limits.

INTEGRATED TRAFFIC SYSTEM FOR THE SOUTHERN MORAVIAN REGION (IDS JMK)
In the year 2002, the Statutory City Of Brno, together with the Southern Moravian Region, founded the company KORDIS JMK, s.r.o., whose task is to coordinate service and guarantee further development of the Integrated Traffic System. Unified tariffs with the option for prepayment have been introduced across the integrated territory, as have a unified sales and information system, unified line designations, etc. Minimizing redundancy between rail, regional bus and municipal transport has boosted service effectiveness and simultaneously improved transport connections. With this system-wide approach, the number of passengers taking advantage of public transportation has increased, especially on the regional level, and has thus limited than negative influence of individual transport in the Brno metropolitan area.
CYCLE TRAFFIC
As of December 2005, there was a total of 37.7 kilometres of cycle paths and lanes, of which 21.7 are cycle paths. These are primarily in stretches alongside the rivers Svratka and Svitava and so-called student radials. |
